Our family is very involved in raising our puppies. This hands-on approach is a core part of both our program and our values. We focus on ensuring that our puppies are comfortable with kids, handling, noise, and the activities of daily life. We hope getting a Hamilton Farm Doodles puppy is the best choice your family has ever made!
Our curriculum emphasizes raising puppies that are empowered, not enabled, to help them develop confidence and a belief in their own abilities that prepare them various roles, including therapy and service dogs.
We believe that the best family puppies are used to being around different types of people and can face new experiences with a sense of adventure. We are intentional to include many socialization and developmental opportunities at appropriate ages.
We use BAB curriculum to incorporate 10 step handling exercises to promote resilience and positive emotional responses in our puppies.
We incorporate five simple but proven exercises to help improve each puppies immune system, stress tolerance, heart and circulation, training, and overall well-being.
We use Animal Genetics to test our parent dogs. They test for diseases common to the parent dogs breed.
We test hips and elbows with OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) to insure the parents of our puppies are as healthy as possible. This testing provides factual evidence for leading health concerns, especially in the case of bigger dog breeds.
Bernedoodles are a cross of a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. The percentage of each breed in an individual puppy will vary based on the generation of the parents.
Bernese Mountain Dogs are known for their affectionate and gentle nature, making them wonderful companions for families, children, and other pets. They are exceptional dogs with a calm, loyal temperament that allows them to become a wonderful family member that offers both love and protection. They have very striking tricolor coats and a majestic appearance.
The downside is the Bernese can come with health problems, shedding, and also a shorter life span of 6-8 years. When we breed the best of the two breeds - Bernese and Poodle, we can produce puppies that do not have the health problems, are low to no shedding, and have a life-span of 12-15 years. Basically, the best of both breeds! With these added benefits, many Bernedoodles go on to be therapy or service dogs.
Bernedoodles are known for being intelligent, pleasant, friendly, easy-going, and people loving. I find our puppies to be easily trainable, and very people oriented. They are the perfect, family-focused, fun-loving pet. They seek to please. (While at the same time, they seek for you to pet them!)
We also raise our puppies using the BAB and Puppy Culture curriculum, so they already have a head-start as far as training and socializing goes.
As with any puppy, they can have the 'puppy energy', but I have found that they are usually less energetic than a goldendoodle (my personal and unbiased opinion! ;) ) and will want to nap after a good play time. I think they have a good balance of energy vs. calm because of the mixing of the Bernese with the Poodle.
Our F1's tend to have very minimal shedding. I do not notice any hair on my clothes or in my house, but sometimes find little dust bunnies of hair in the corners of my house. Our F1b's and mini's have done very well in families with allergies and have been no-shed so far. Someone with serious allergies may want to consider a puppy with more poodle.
Our Ultra Bernedoodles have the same genetics as an F1 would have as far as shedding. Our multi-gens would be more like a poodle, since often they carry 2 furnishing genes just like a poodle but with different hair types. So they can be straight-coated but still have a no-shed coat.
As puppies grow into their adult coat, they tend to lose their puppy fur. This is not shedding but more of a transition. Usually their adult coat has grown in by around 12 months. For all types, you will need to keep up with brushing and regular grooming.
Because we are mixing two dog breeds: Bernese, with their straight hair and Poodle, with their curly hair, we can have a variety of coat types. I think is the best of both worlds! Our bernedoodles can have straight, wavy, or curly coats.
An F1 typically has a thick, full coat that is wavy. If you blow-dry it, they will be fluffy but if left to dry naturally it will have a more shaggy look. Of course it also depends on how long you let their coat get. Not every bernedoodle will have the same type of wave or curl, just like humans have different hair types.
F1b bernedoodles usually have a wavy or curly coat, depending on which parent they get their coat genetics from.
Our Ultra Puppies can be straight or wavy while our multi-gen puppies can be wavy, straight, or curly. Sometimes I breed a litter to get that straight look and sometimes they will have wave or curl. I will usually specify what the coat type for each litter is going to be, so you know what to expect.
For all coat types, they will need to be regularly groomed and brushed. The longer their coat gets, the more diligent you will need to be to brush them often and also follow up using a steel comb to make sure you are getting out any mats near the skin. I tend to groom my dogs every 2 months and keep their coats shorter, so I don't need to do daily maintenance. Of course, it is up to you and your preference. You can try different cuts and see what works for you!
The size of the parents is the main determining factor for the size of their puppies. Also, we can look at past puppies with the same parents and the size of past generations of parents to determine adult size of a puppy.
Here are the sizes we offer:
Standards - 60-100 lbs with heights from 22-26" at the shoulder.
Mediums - 35-55 lbs and heights from 20-22" at the shoulder.
Miniatures - 25-35 lbs and from 16-18" tall at the shoulder.
Micro-mini's will be under 25 lbs and around 12-15" tall at the shoulder.
Because we are adding in the incredible variety of color that poodles can have, we can get lots of different colors!
Tri- the classic bernedoodle look! It is the most popular color we have.
Merle - a very distinct color pattern with dark patches marbled against lighter patches. Merle's are a little harder to come by and sometimes get those cute blue eyes!
Sable - a hair pattern when each hair gets two colors. The tips are usually black while the coat keeps it original color. Often sable puppies can fade and/or lose the black tips after grooming. Sometimes, when you groom them they look lighter, but as their hair grows they get darker again. Fun fact: we have a few mama's in our program that are black-based sable, meaning their tips are not black but the base coat is. These moms have an intense brownish, red color to them and their puppies tend to keep their gorgeous colors!
Parti- parti is where the dog is over half white. They can also have merle or sable with this coloring.
These names refer to different generations (mixes) of the Bernese with the Poodle and are the different types we breed.
F1 - the dog is 50% Bernese and 50% Poodle
F1b - the dog is 25% Bernese and 75% Poodle
Ultra - the dog is over 50% Bernese resulting in "extra" Bernese characteristics.
Multi-gen - the dog is a mix of bernedoodles.
*We always make sure the parent dogs will produce the non-shedding coat types.
